IRS Tax Attorney Services
Together, Howard and Griffin help clients navigate difficult and complex IRS problems. Our practice focuses on resolving federal and state tax controversies through strategic representation and practical solutions.
IRS Collections
Our firm assists clients at every stage of the collection process, from filing delinquent tax returns to securing installment agreements and pursuing other collection alternatives.
We help taxpayers navigate IRS collection matters, including Collection Due Process (CDP) appeals in response to Final Notices of Intent to Levy or Notices of Federal Tax Lien. We also routinely assist businesses with payroll tax issues, including IRS Trust Fund Recovery Penalty investigations and civil penalty matters.
Revenue Officer Representation
IRS Revenue Officers are field collection agents assigned to more complex collection matters. Unlike many IRS notices and letters that are automatically generated by computer systems, Revenue Officers typically handle cases involving significant tax liabilities, multiple years of unfiled returns, payroll tax problems, and business compliance issues.
Our firm regularly works with Revenue Officers to protect taxpayers’ rights while navigating the collection process. We assist clients with preparing financial disclosures, including Form 433-A and other collection information statements, and work toward securing reasonable payment arrangements while helping clients avoid unnecessary liquidation of assets.
Payroll Tax Issues
Payroll tax problems can quickly become some of the most serious tax issues facing business owners. We represent businesses and responsible individuals dealing with unpaid employment payroll issues such as 940 and 941 taxes. These matters can often involve IRS investigations by Revenue Officers and potential Trust Fund Recovery Penalty assessments against responsible individuals.
Our firm helps clients understand their options and works toward resolving payroll tax liabilities through an installment agreement, hardship status, or other collection alternative, all while protecting their personal and business interests.
Audits and Audit Reconsideration
An IRS audit is never a comfortable experience. Our firm has handled numerous difficult audits involving both individuals and businesses. These audits may involve examinations conducted by IRS auditors, as well as automated underreported notices such as IRS CP2000 notices.
Many audits are resolved through effective communication and negotiation with the IRS auditor. However, when an audit does not result in a favorable resolution, our practice assists clients with additional options, including audit reconsideration and administrative appeals.
Delinquent Return Preparation
Having years of unfiled tax returns can feel overwhelming. Many taxpayers are unsure where to begin or how to address years of missing filings.
Our firm routinely assists clients with preparing and filing delinquent tax returns, including individual returns, business returns, and returns for self-employed taxpayers. We work with clients to determine which returns are required, prepare accurate filings, and ensure compliance with IRS requirements.
After returns are filed, we help clients address any resulting tax liabilities through available options, including installment agreements, Currently Not Collectible status, Offers in Compromise, or other collection alternatives. In some cases, we help our clients claim missing refunds or credits that they are entitled to.
Federal Tax Litigation and United States Tax Court
When tax disputes cannot be resolved through administrative procedures, litigation may become necessary. Our firm represents taxpayers in federal tax litigation, including matters before the United States Tax Court. We have successfully represented numerous personal and businesses in Tax Court and have obtained favorable results without the need for lengthy and expensive trials. Our Tax Court experience has helped us handle complex tax disputes involving IRS notice of determinations, collection issues.
Additionally, we have represented taxpayers and tax return preparers in Federal District Court and the United States Court of Appeals. Through effective advocacy and negotiation, we have helped clients achieve favorable outcomes while working with the Department of Justice and government counsel.
Ohio and Michigan Tax Controversies
We represent individuals and businesses facing Ohio and Michigan state tax issues, including audits, collections, payment arrangements, and other state tax controversies.
